The SHOO FLY Building Block is a good pattern for beginners. The half square triangle “1 inch rule” and squaring up are featured in the tutorial for this block. You will also learn about fabric value and how this can change the look of your block. (If you want to experiment with value, you’ll have to wait as the fabric in the kit is limited. It’s just enough to match the photo.)
This pattern is part of LearnHowToQuilt’s Building Blocks. With Building Blocks, quilters learn one or more quilting skills while making a block. This is a great way for beginners to pick up new techniques/methods without having to commit to a whole quilt. Each kit contains the pattern and fabric used to make a block along with a link to a step-by-step video. Extra PDF copies of the patterns are also available online.
These completed blocks can be added together to form a quilt, used in other ventures found in Small Projects, or kept as references.
