Quilt Pattern/Name: Fat Chicks ”I Spy” Quilt
Quilt Size: 50 inches by 60 inches
Quilt Maker: pieced by Ann Tarabini/machine quilted by Ruthmary Schauer
Quilt Completion Date: spring 2005
The minute I saw this pattern (Chubby Chicks) from Black Mountain Quilts I knew I had to make it. My quilt group had just exchanged 5” fabric squares for making “I Spy” quilts.
(“I Spy” quilts have lots of pictures hidden in the fabric making it fun to play the children’s game “I spy with my little eye…..”) I decided to use my fabric squares for the chicken bodies that were appliqued using a fusible. I also added some triangles in the corner with more objects to be “spied”. For the back of the quilt, I used a printed panel. This was quilted by Ruthmary Schauer. She meandered around the chicks and then added a fun design in the borders (see below). I was quite pleased with the results!
This quilt is not difficult to make. It would make a good quilt for a confident beginner. If you’re hesitant to sew the Pinwheels between the chicks, why not try just one block? To purchase a kit for one block, please visit our shop.
