Extra Information: I saw this pattern by Emily Herrick and knew I had to make one. It is a good quilt for using up your scraps (or for building your stash!). Many of the fabrics were “trades” from the Threadheads sewing group. I added some of my favorites – polka dots and stripes – along with Kaffe Fasset fabrics. I tried to use fabric only once but accidently slipped in a second repeat. (See if you can find them.) Instead of using a solid background I decided to try out the newspaper print fabric. It brought back fond memories of the newspaper we laid down in art class for messy (but fun) colorful projects.
I had plans for free motion quilting designs on the crayons but “chickened out” at the last minute. I used straight line stitching to stitch in the ditch around each crayon. Then I used some more straight line quilting to secure the inside of each crayon. On the last crayon (cranberry), I decided to use a zig-zag pattern (which looks easy but required a lot of repositioning the bulky quilt) . On the back of the quilt I continued the newspaper theme and used a newspaper/yellow striped fabric.
I enjoyed making this quilt – brought a smile to my face!
My “I Spy” baby quilt is a shortened version of the original pattern.
