A “follower” refers to a small scrap of fabric that you run through your machine after stitching patchwork. (When you begin the seam you sew on to another scrap of fabric called a “leader”.)  It helps you to sew more accurately.  You also don’t have to worry about those loose threads when ending on your patchwork as the threads end up on this scrap.
